CICES North West host Survey4BIM

The CICES North West region recently hosted a CPD event at their offices in Sale, presented by the cross-industry Survey4Bim group.

The speakers were Survey4BIM committee members, Simon Navin (Ordnance Survey) and Mark Lawton (Skanska) who explained the history and reasons behind the group as well as detailing the Big 5 Challenges in achieving BIM Level 2 – Accuracy, Interoperability, Level of Detail, Meta-Data & Generalisation.

Whilst a major opportunity for the construction industry as a whole, Building Information Modelling (BIM) in undoubtedly the biggest change that will effect the geospatial industry over the next 5 years.  However, due to the numerous sectors and specialisms involved in our industry, the implementation is dependent on collaboration between all participants and interested parties.

Formby Surveys recognises that the survey profession needs to be at the forefront of BIM for Geomatics and despite the technical and cultural challenges that lie ahead, the geospatial profession has a significant and unique contribution to make.

Formby Surveys’ MD and regional CICES committee member, Andy Roberts commented that “BIM can clearly deliver benefits for clients and the UK property and construction industry as a whole and should be view by the survey and geomatics industry as the next major commercial opportunity.  The presentation was a chance for CICES members, and non-members, to understand where we, as a industry, can fit into the process  as well as informally network, learn about the subject and share in a BIM discussion focussed on the geospatial and geomatics sector”.

Whilst BIM isn’t all about a “3D model”, it can be a important factor and Formby Surveys’ scan to BIM services are increasingly being sought by our architectural, retail and engineering clients.
