What does MIPIM 2017 mean for Liverpool’s future development?

It’s that time of year again and MIPIM is well underway. Year on year, Liverpool seems to be increasingly represented by delegates from a variety of professional backgrounds, including property developers, architects, engineers and… Surveyors, to name just a few!

With plans for Liverpool’s growth being announced before MIPIM 2017, there was inevitably going to be some exciting developments being discussed at the Invest Liverpool panel. So, what’s been discussed so far? What have we learnt from MIPIM 2017?

  1. Everton FC’s move from Goodison Park to a “state of the art” stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in North Liverpool is moving even closer. Part of landowner Peel Group’s £5.5bn Liverpool Waters regeneration scheme, the dock appears to be the preferred option for the new home of the blues. Speaking at MIPIM, Peel’s development director Lindsey Ainsworth indicated that a deal isn’t far from being made.
  1. Liverpool Council have launched their search for a development partner on their “cultural garden suburb” at this year’s MIPIM. The 90-acre former International Festival Gardens site will be renamed Festival Park Liverpool. A revised masterplan for the site will be considered by the council next month with the potential to build 2,500 new homes.
  1. A 35m proton cancer treatment centre is to be built in the Knowledge Quarter. The £1bn development in Liverpool’s university district is opening in 2018. The centre will be able to treat up to 700 patients a year and will be based yards from where the new northern headquarters of the Royal College of Physicians will also be constructed. The centre will be one of four centres built by Proton Partners International in the UK.
  1. Liverpool based hoteliers, Signature Living are Invest Liverpool’s headline partner at this year’s MIPIM and are announcing more exciting plans. After building an incredibly successful hotel group in Liverpool, they have announced their plans to create another hotel in Belfast. Signature Living have acquired a former courthouse in Crumlin Road, Belfast for an undisclosed sum and have announced a 25m plan to convert the iconic building in to a luxury hotel.
